Lexi was never a particularly good child -- growing up in a bandit village, inhabiting a world long since dead and destroyed, she never had much of a chance of being one. She was always in competition with her older, prettier sister -- Brook -- which lead to a lot of scraps, scuffles, and dumb decisions. Ever since she could remember, Lexi had to fight to be seen as an equal, and not inferior.
On one of their early escapades -- an excursion to check the traps -- she came across a broken and twisted creature on the ground. Deciding to show it mercy, even as Brook laughed at her, she decided to kill it; it would never know the horrors of the world, being so young, so maybe it would die an innocent.
Then Ash spat at her and she was just so fucking pissed she decided to raise him until he wasn't such a wanker, because, well, she'd work out the rest later.
After he tried to kill her, things changed -- he wasn't her helpless charge anymore, he was dangerous. It was a while before she got over her shame and anger and disappointment and could face him again, but when she tried to release him, he stayed.
Having him under her care mellowed her -- still brash and aggressive, she's now capable of acknowledging that other people exist and maybe it's worth caring about their life as well as her own. Every now and again, she even puts his needs before hers; every now and again, he crawls into her bed when he's cold. The fact he doesn't listen to her doesn't stop her taking him on raids with her, if only because she gets lonely when he isn't around.
Despite this, most of the time, he doesn't even speak. She might be a more rounded person, but she sure as hell ain't always so smart.
